Top 9 Women’s Players for the 2014 Australian Open

The year’s first major tennis event is already underway. One of the few Grand Slams to be played on outdoor hard courts, the Australian Open quickly separates the top tennis players of the world from the up-and-coming professionals.

This year’s open is bound to be an exciting event, with some of the tennis world’s best female athletes preparing to compete. We have teamed up with the tennis experts at wimbledondebentureholders.com to bring you their top women’s players for 2014.

1. Li Na

Chinese tennis player Li Na is one of this year’s top competitors. With a history of high-level finishes at major tournaments, many believe that she could walk away with the Australian Open victory.

2. Serena Williams

She is one of the world’s most well known tennis stars, and she may soon walk away with her sixth Australian Open victory. Serena Williams needs no introduction and after recent performances she’s on track to becoming a serious threat to reigning champ Victoria Azarenka.

3. Maria Sharapova

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is ranked third in the world, making her one of the top competitors in the tournament. With a victory in 2008 on her record, she is also one to watch at this year’s tournament.

4. Victoria Azarenka

Former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka has won the Australian Open two years in a row. Currently ranked no. 2 the reigning champion has returned with her sights set on the trophy at this year’s tournament.

5. Sloane Stephens

Slone Stephens is one of America’s youngest tennis stars. Just 20 years of age, she is on track to make this year’s finals after reaching the semi-finals during the last Australian Open.

6. Roberta Vinci

One of the only Italian players in this year’s Australian Open, Roberta Vinci is widely regarded as one of the world’s top players. Ranked 11th overall, she is one of the top doubles players, having won last year’s Australian Open with partner Sara Errani.

7. Laura Robson

At just 19 years of age, Laura Robson is already the UK’s top female tennis player. In the 2012 London Olympics, she walked away with a silver medal following a mixed doubles game with Andy Murray.

8. Caroline Wozniacki

Danish player Caroline Wozniacki is one of Scandinavia’s top tennis stars. She made the Australian Open semi-finals in 2011, and could achieve an even better result in this tournament.

9. Sam Stosur

Sam Stosur is an Australian former world number one 1 in doubles. She is one of this year’s top players, ranked No.17 by the WTA. In 2011, she beat Serena Williams in the final of the Us Open. She is most well known for her ferocious serve, which is one of the fastest in the women’s circuit.
