Former world No. 1 and 22-time Major winner Rafael Nadal was forced to withdraw from the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters next week in Monaco on Thursday, citing that “My body simply won’t allow me (to participate),” on his social media channels.

The Spaniard, who has played only one event this year in Brisbane, Australia, hasn’t been on a competitive court since losing to Carlos Alcaraz at the Netflix Challenge in Las Vegas in March.

Hi all, these are very difficult moments for me, sporting wise. Unfortunately I have to tell you that I am not going to be playing in Monte Carlo. My body simply won’t allow me. pic.twitter.com/BEi0UUe1au

With the French Open looming next month in Paris, France, Nadal’s participation in the event is uncertain. Retirement questions have been circling over the 37-year-old for quite sometime, and the end to his stellar career appears to be closer than ever before.

Nadal is an 11-time winner in Monte Carlo, and last played in the event in 2021.

The 2024 edition of the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters is set to take place from April 6 – 14, 2024.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will lead the field, which will include Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Andrey Rublev.
