Emma Raducanu Wins Maiden US Open Title Over Leylah Fernandez

US Open—Flushing Meadows, New York

Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu shocked the tennis world on Saturday in Flushing Meadows, New York by winning her maiden Grand Slam title over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-4.

In a thrilling match that lasted one hour and 51 minutes, it was Raducanu who continued to show her brilliant level of play that took her through the qualifying tournament all the way to the title. Never losing a set during her 10 matches in New York, Raducanu struck three aces, won 72 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.

Being the first qualifier to ever win the US Open, Raducanu will be ranked No. 23 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released. She entered the event ranked No. 150.

Fernandez, who defeated defending champ Naomi Osaka, former winner Angie Kerber, No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina and No. 2 ranked Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the event, will move up to No. 28 in the world when the latest rankings are released. The Canadian won many hearts throughout the fortnight and proved that she is here to stay as a prominent name on the WTA.
