Mutua Madrid Open—Madrid, Spain

Alcaraz Advances in Madrid

Sunday’s action at the Madrid Open saw two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advance to the fourth round, dismissing Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-3, 6-3.

Never playing his opponent on Tour, Alcaraz produced 19 winners, two aces and won 87 percent of his first serve points.

The 20-year-old Spaniard will next face Jan-Lennard Struff in a rematch of last year’s final. Struff has been in great form as of late, winning this first career title in Munich, Germany last week.

Elsewhere, No. 7 seed Andrey Rublev picked up another win on the clay of Europe, dispatching No. 27 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(10), 6-4.

The Russian will take on No. 24 seed Tallon Griekspoor for a place in the quarterfinals. Griekspoor ousted Danish star Holger Rune in three sets. Rune, who owns four career titles, has now gone over a year without winning a tournament.

Rybakina Marches On

On the women’s side, former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina cruised past Mayar Sherif 6-1, 6-4. The towering Kazak next faces Sara Bejlek for a quarterfinal birth. Bejlek ousted Ashlyn Krueger earlier in the day in three sets.

Yulia Putintseva also reached the final 16 of the event, defeating Caroline Dolehide 6-2, 6-2.

Monday’s schedule of play in Madrid will be highlighted by top seed Iga Swiatek and five-time former winner Rafael Nadal. Swiatek will take on Sara Sorribes Tormo and Nadal faces Pedro Cachin.

Watch all the action live this week from the Madrid Open on Tennis TV.

Get ready for the year’s second Major today, with great tickets to the French Open in Paris. Nadal has stated that this year could be his final trip to Paris as a professional player.
