Ruud, Rune, and Swiatek Reach French Open Third Round; Sinner Ousted

Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud reached the third round of the French Open on Thursday in Paris, dispatching Giulio Zeppieri 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Ruud, who has had an up-and-down season, will next face Zhizhen Zhang.

No. 6 seed Holger Rune also advanced to the third-round when Frenchman Gael Monfils was forced to withdraw with a wrist injury. Rune will take on Genaro Alberto Olivieri for a place in the fourth round.

The match of the day saw Daniel Altmaier need five hours and 26 minutes to oust No. 8 seed Jannik Sinner 6-7(0) 7-6(7), 1-6, 7-6(4), 7-5.

Elsewhere, tournament dark-horse Tomas Martin Etcheverry upset No. 18 seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3. The Argentine, who has made two finals this year, will next face Borna Coric or Pedro Cachin.

On the women’s side, reigning Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina ousted Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-3 and will next face Sara Sorribes Tormo.

No. 14 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced earlier in the day, but No. 20 seed Madison Keys wasn’t as lucky. The former US Open finalist was defeated by country woman Kayla Day, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Women’s top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek eased Claire Liu 6-4, 6-0 and will next face Wang Xinyu on Saturday.

Friday’s schedule in Paris will feature Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic.
