Western & Southern Open—Cincinnati, Ohio

Reigning Wimbledon winner Garbine Muguruza completed her preparations for next week’s US Open by dismantling No. 2 seed Simona Halep 6-1, 6-0 in the finals of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday. Needing only 56 minutes to claim the fifth title of her career, Muguruza won 68 percent of her first serve points, 69 percent of her second serve points and broke serve on five occasions. Improving to 3-1 against Halep in lifetime meetings, Muguruza will now head into the US Open as the favorite to win the title.

Halep, who was aiming to become the No. 1 player in the world, continued her solid season on Tour by reaching the finals. The Romanian will now set her sights on winning her maiden Grand Slam title in New York next week.

Next up, the men’s final featured a dynamic encounter between Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios. Full of entertaining rallies and serving throughout, Dimitrov captured his maiden Masters 1000 title 6-3, 7-5 over his Australian opponent.

Overcoming 15 aces, Dimitrov broke serve on two occasions and never lost his own delivery during the one hour and 25 minute contest.

Taking home his seventh career title and third of the year, Dimitrov will reenter the top 10 on Monday.

Both Dimitrov and Kyrgios will next see action at the US Open in New York.
