Wimbledon 2022: Schedule of Play for Saturday June 9

Wimbledon Championships—London, England

Elena Rybakina won her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon on Saturday, defeating No. 2 seed Ons Jabeur 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

After dropping the opening set to her higher ranked opponent, Rybakina locked into her high velocity game to run away with the next two sets. Needing one hour and 48 minutes to prevail, Rybakina hit four aces, won 63 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.

Entering the event as the No. 17 seed, Rybakina defeated former champion Simona Halep in the semifinals and former US Open winner Bianca Andresscu in the second round. Earning £2 million for her victory, Rybakina will be ranked No. 23 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released. As previously stated, the WTA awarded no points to players at Wimbledon this year because of the Russian and Belarusian ban.

Jabeur, who was looking to win her first-ever Major, was visibly disappointed after losing the final. The Tunisian had made it known early this year that winning Wimbledon in 2022 was her top priority.

Sunday’s action at Wimbledon will feature top seed Novak Djokovic taking on popular Australian Nick Kyrgios. The pair will be squaring off for the third time, with Kyrgios leading their head-to-head 2-0.
